I like my clients. This is just a teaser photo (wait until you see the rest) and is only the first part of a six part engagement series featuring these two and their weird love. Go balls deep! More to come.

You may have seen my post a few months ago featuring an engagement session I shot late one night at the Elgin Street Diner in Ottawa, well here is the behind the scenes video to go with it. Many thanks to James Park for shooting and editing. Enjoy!

Couple kindles romance over late night poutine

Falling in love doesn’t often happen in a photographer’s studio — unless, perhaps, you’re a photographer. So, Kaitlin Grant and Keith Charlebois kissed for their engagement photos where they kindled their romance—over late-night poutine at the Elgin Street Diner.

The couple’s photo caused a stir on Twitter in Ottawa yesterday, trending after photographer Blair Gable’s former colleagues mentioned it online.

The idea for the photos came from Gable, who hates the “cheesy, totally posed, totally contrived nonsense” typical of too many engagement photos, after he asked the couple about how they fell in love.

“I’ve had this shot in my head for a couple of years, and I’ve been waiting for a couple to say, ‘poutine,’” said Gable.

Grant loved the idea. “I wanted our photographer to capture and convey, rather than pose us for some fake photos,” she said.

Both Grant and Charlebois don’t normally like getting their photos taken, but the experience was fun, she said.

Guests at the wedding reception at Saunders Farm next year will have a chance at their own romance over cheese curds and gravy.

“We’re going to be having a poutine bar, kind of a late night snack at our wedding,” said Grant.

I am very much looking forward to photographing Megan and Travis’ wedding next year at St. Patrick’s Basilica and the Sergeant and Warrant Officer’s mess in Ottawa. They liked to go on road trips when they first started dating, so we wanted to bring the spontaneity of pulling off at a random, scenic location into the shoot.

When Megan spontaneously jumped into Travis’ arms while they were standing on the rocks I thought they were both going into the water. He gave me the ‘holy shit’ look right before she leaped; it’s a good thing he does his sit-ups.

Here at Blair Gable Photography we just don’t take pictures of people in meadow’s at dusk, sometimes we stand in the middle of rivers. Katelyn and Ben are a great couple who’s wedding I will have the pleasure of photographing next year and we headed out into the county for their engagement shoot. The first attempt was ended when a massive thunderstorm rolled into town, the second time we nailed it – the light was perfect. The only problem was that we had to hop across slick river rocks to get to it! Despite wearing heeled boots, Katelyn took it all in stride.
